Paul and Jan’s story began when they found an old derelict cottage nestled in the Welsh countryside that had the most amazing views. “I was taken aback by the outstanding, south-facing views over the Severn Valley,” Paul recalls. When the cottage was put on the market, they grabbed the opportunity while they could. Despite there being a lot of interest in the property, they were successful with the purchase.
Once the purchase was complete the goal was to completely renovate the old cottage and replace the old barn that was next to it with a large, barn style, oak frame extension. The renovation of the cottage took 4 years to complete with Paul doing most of the work himself along with a local stone mason. After the renovation was complete the couple moved in and turned their attention to rebuilding the barn.
The 4000 square ft oak frame extension was built a few years later following a battle with the local planning authority. Built at an angle, the extension features extensive glazing to frame the dramatic views and maximise the natural light throughout the day. Th extension is sympathetic to the original cottage, taking into account the scale and proportion as well as being in keeping with the local vernacular. Local materials were used wherever possible.
The oak frame was manufactured by Welsh Oak Frame and was erected and made watertight within 12 days. The oak external cladding nestles the extension within the beautifully landscaped grounds and sits harmoniously beside the original cottage. Internally, the oak frame takes centre stage with all the theatrical features associated with oak frames, including braced king post trusses, tied king post trusses, wind braces and more. Handcrafted detailing on the frame add character and finish it off beautifully. The open plan layout creates a sense of space and the glazing and bifold doors allow the natural light to flood in. The staircases lead to two mezzanine areas where the oak frame can be appreciated from a higher level.
