Now in its 11th year, the Build It Awards is the UK’s most prestigious, independently-judged scheme celebrating the best of self build and renovation. We have scoped out the best homes, architects and designers in the industry so that you can find the highest-quality expert help and inspiration for your self build, renovation or extension project.

What sets the Build It Awards apart is they are scrutinised by an expert panel, which includes some of the self build and renovation industry’s leading lights.

Unlike some awards schemes, this isn’t an arbitrary gong or a social media popularity contest. All but one of our category winners (for the Best Self Build or Renovation Project) is decided by our expert judging panel.

So, winning or being shortlisted for a Build It Award comes with an expert-backed seal of approval that can give you, the self builder, real confidence when specifying the best architects, designers, products and services for your home building project.

Here we give you the run-down on our 2022 Build It Award-winning homes, architects and designers, with 13 awards going to projects from extensions and brick builds through to eco houses and ICF homes.

Royan and Helen Anthony created this striking self build home with Welsh Oak Frame, who helped bring their goals of a low-maintenence and characterful home to life.

Their new oak home was ready for them to move into 15 months after starting on site – and they’re thrilled with the results. “Building in oak was the perfect solution for us,” says Royan. “We have the convenience of modern living alongside the character of oak.”

Best Oak Frame Home

Oakwrights for Philip Roberts & Judi Burdett’s Home

Helen Needham, Oakwrights’ head of architecture, helped Philip and Judi’s bring their post and beam-style home to life. “The local honey-coloured stone gives out a warm and welcoming feel against the often-grey background of the Lancashire skies.”

The stone partners wonderfully with the oak frame, erected in 10 days on site. It took seven weeks for the Oakwrights team to install the WrightWall and WrightRoof encapsulation panels, giving the couple a dry house shell to move forward with.

Best Off-Site Manufactured Home

Graven Hill Development Corporation for the Hooker’s Home by Dan-Wood

Gemma and James Hooker have built a two-storey detached house at Graven Hill – the UK’s largest self and custom build development. The couple engaged turnkey specialist Dan-Wood for their project, working closely with the company’s designer.

Best ICF Home

Lilburn & Elliott Construction for Above the Bar

Lilburn & Elliott took on this building project on a rocky cliff face plot with difficult access and a 100m drop to the sea. “Our structural engineer recommended ICF would be strong, light and easier to use on this difficult site,” say owners Mr & Mrs Anderson.

Best Architect or Designer for an Extension Project

Paul Archer Design for Zucchi House

Homeowners Helen and Benedict approached Paul Archer Design to create this double-height extension, along with an internal remodel.

The design opens up the house to flow through the new extension, with the upper ground floor housing a new kitchen-dinner with a dropped ceiling and rooflights. A sleek balcony overlooks the garden and the lower ground floor is now flexible, with sliding partitions to allow the zone to be turned into a guest room.

Best Architect or Designer for a Renovation or Conversion Project

Unagru Architects for House for a Cellist

The owner of this Victorian terraced house, a musician and scientist, wanted to create a bright home with distinctive design moments.

Unagru Architects have more than fulfilled the brief. Among the key features is a circular skylight that draws daylight deep into the floorplan, bringing interesting shapes and shadows. A timber-clad, wedge-shaped amenity room cleverly enhances openness and a sleek modern brick extension has been fitted with large and seamless glazed doors.

Best SIPs Home

Allan Corfield Architects for this Low Energy Home in Fife

Norman and Jackie Wright identified Allan Corfield Architects as an ideal partner to complete their low-energy home. SIPs fitted the brief perfectly, enabling easy creation of double-height zones and delivering the angular volumes that define the finished home’s eye-catching architecture.

Best Self Build under £250k

The Mikietyns for their Highland Self Build

Owners Alice and Moz bought the plot for just £57,000, and then completed their 70m2 home for under £125,000. They worked with North Woods Design to engineer and construct the timber frame shell and completed the self build in just 12 months.

Best Brick Home

Paul Archer Design for Willowbrook

Paul Archer Design was commissioned to rejuvenate and extend this home self built in 1981. The design retained as much of the original brick as possible, carefully knitting this together with modern elements.

The project features Ibstock infill panels, London Stock second hand bricks from Selco, and Ketley blue engineering bricks from Travis Perkins – with reclaimed and reused units added into the mix.

Best Timber Frame Home

Fiddes Architects for Camhanaich

Fiddes architects worked with timber frame supplier Angus Homes and completed the house shell in just four weeks, creating an  efficient and comfortable build for client Vivien Mackinlay.

Best Custom Build Project or Model

Oakwrights for Webbs Meadow

Webbs Meadow is a custom build scheme by Oakwrights and landowner Kinsey Hern. The scheme consists of 13 plots, each containing full planning permission for detached homes with Utility connections and highways access guaranteed.
